My Dolls is the latest poetry book by Mariya Doneva, aimed at very young readers. This time, her main characters are the dolls—the ones who show understanding, offer courage and comfort, and act as mediators between the innocent reality of children and the challenge-filled world of adults.

Despite its short length, the book covers an impressive range of themes. With an excellent understanding of children’s emotional worlds and lived experiences, Doneva portrays various situations that may feel troubling to children, as well as important changes in their lives. With tenderness and empathy, she addresses topics such as moving to a new home, midnight nightmares, visits to the doctor, and welcoming a new member of the family.

The book offers delicately and playfully presented messages, free of moralizing; it speaks in a child’s voice and communicates with children as equals.
